MATT'S BOOZE BUSTER
20 April 2005
Jay bans pals in bid to beat bottle
Ex-Busted star Matt Jay has cut off his pals while he battles his booze demons at a a drying out clinic.
The troubled 22-year-old has banned phone calls and visits from former bandmate James Bourne, only maintaining contact with on-off girlfriend Emma Griffiths.
With Bourne still embarking on late-night drinking sprees, Matt - who checked into The Priory clinic just over a week ago - fears he'll be a bad influence.
"Matt's phone is turned off and no one can get hold of him," a close pal confided to 3am. "Obviously, James is really worried about him but Matt's therapists think isolation is for the best.
"The only person he has allowed to visit him is Emma. Contrary to what has been reported, it was Em who dropped him off at the clinic and she'll pick him up when he's finished there."
Only this week, Emma, an MTV presenter, told a magazine about earlier booze binges with Matt.
"We'd go to dive bars and get drunk on shots and dance like stupid idiots," revealed the brunette beauty. She confessed she'd met Matt in October and the pair quickly became "drinking pals".
Last week, it was rumoured a massive row between the pair had threatened their romance but, our source says, Emma is determined to support Matt while he fights his addiction in the London clinic. The boybander began to drink more heavily when Busted fell apart. Both he and James, 21, were devastated when third member Charlie Simpson quit to front "serious" rock band Fightstar in January.
"Matt probably took the break up of the band the hardest," our source reveals.
"He was left with too much time on his hands and lots of mates who wanted to drag him to the nearest bar."
While Matt has sought treatment, James has continued hitting the bars - recently knocking back vodka and champagne at trendy club Isis and brawling with a photographer outside Umbaba.
"His record company, Universal, is piling on the pressure and wants James to sort out his new band," said the close mate. "But James has been finding it tough and the nights out drinking are a way to relieve the stress."
Now James has yet another concern... "He just hopes that Matt doesn't shut him out once he leaves the clinic," said our mole. "His friends are all still there for him."
Yep, bet Charlie will be round with a bunch of flowers quicker than you can say "New band"!
