Busted were one of the biggest British pop bands of the 00's. They clocked up eight top three singles, four of which made it to number one (excluding their input on Band Aid III which spent four weeks at the top spot). They topped the charts in numerous countries, including Japan, and managed to get to no.6 in the Spanish charts before they had even been there. Both albums got to number two in the UK charts - the second only just being beaten by Michael Jackson's Number Ones, and went platinum in ELEVEN days, making them the biggest selling UK band of 2003. 2004 was even better - they sold out two UK arenas (including 11 SOLD OUT Wembleys), won two Brit awards (among many others) and even made their own MTV show tracking their progress in America.
It came as a shock to the world when, on January 14th 2005, Busted held a press conference to clear up rumours of Charlie's departure after he had joined his current band, Fightstar, over a year earlier. Unfortunately, the rumour was finally true.
Millions were left distraught and shocked by the news - even non-Busted fans, who admitted that it was a surprise that one of the country's biggest bands had suddenly called it a day when they were likely to crack America very shortly. I truly believe that with the help of their fans, they would have made it big in the States, and that they would have become as big as legends such as the Beatles.
Busted were one of a kind. They introduced millions of children to what haters would consider 'real' music, and inspired many (including me) to play guitar and write music, and with some, even saved lives. Busted were a band that made so many people look at music and life in general in a different light, even with their light-hearted, fun songs - proving that not all great bands have to write political critique to gain credibility.
Busted were original - no matter what people say about the fact they wrote many songs about girls, you can't deny the fact that they were different. For example, name me one other band that has written a song about faking orgasms? Lusting after teachers? Crashing weddings? Air hostesses? I rest my case.
Busted were a band that made millions of people happy throughout their two and a half year career, and I believe this is one of the many things that made Busted such an incredible band.
For that, I have to say a huge thank you to James Bourne, Matt Willis and Charlie Simpson, for everything they have done for us. You and your music will live on in our hearts forever.
